APA Professional Paper

End matter

The end matter of your paper is whatever appears after the text (body) of your paper and always includes, the reference list for which we have dedicated a separate section on this guide, and may include elements like footnotes, tables, figures, and appendices. You can find some basic information below about these extra paper elements, in case you decide to include such material in your paper.

1. Footnotes

Footnotes are brief notes that provide additional information or copyright attribution. You can place the footnotes in the text (body) of the paper or you can place them on a separate page, right after the reference list.

If you decide to place the footnotes at the end of your paper:

  • first go to a new page after your references and on the top of the page write out 'Footnotes'. Keep the label Bold and Centered.
  • then, go in the text and insert the first Endnote. Automatically, a superscript number will appear in the text and at the footnotes page where you can start writing your note.
  • leave a space between the superscript number and the note.
  • double-space and first line indent the footnotes.
  • remove the footnote line separator , that will appear on the top of the page as soon as you insert the first footnote.
  • if you plan to add tables, figures, or appendices, after the footnotes page, you will need to separate the paper in sections, and not add a page break after the footnotes. To do so, watch this video

2. Tables

Tables may be embedded within the text after they have been mentioned or they can be displayed on separate pages, one for each table, after the footnotes page, if there is one.

Each table should have a label and a title. Label each table with a number (e.g. 'Table 1' 'Table 2'). The label should appear in bold and be left-aligned. After the label Table 1, you should give a desriptive title for the content of the table. The title should be in italics, left-aligned and title case, meaning that all important words start with a capital letter. Keep the label and the title in separate lines at the top of the page on which the table begins. If you plan to add more tables, figures, or appendices, insert a Page Break as soon as you finish adding the table.

3. Figures

Figures may be embedded within the text after they have been mentioned or they can be displayed on separate pages, one for each figure, after tables, if there are any.

Each figure should have a label and a title. Label each figure with a number (e.g. 'Figure 1' 'Figure 2'). The label should appear in bold and be left-aligned. After the label Figure 1, you should give a desriptive title for the content of the figure. The title should be in italics, left-aligned and title case, meaning that all important words start with a capital letter. Keep the label and the title in separate lines at the top of the page on which the figure appears. If you plan to add more figures, or appendices, insert a Page Break as soon as you finish adding the figure.

4. Appendices

An appendix is appropriate for materials that supplement the paper's content but would be distracting or inappropriate to appear in the text. Such material can be:

  • lists of stimulus material
  • instructions for participants
  • tests, scales, or inventories
  • detailed descriptions of complex equipment
  • detailed demographic descriptions

Appendix begin on a new page, right after any figures. Each appendix should have a label and a title. If the paper has only one appendix, label it as: 'Appendix'. If the paper has more than one appendix, label each appendix with a capital letter (e.g. 'Appendix A,' 'Appendix B'). After the label Appendi X, you should give a desriptive title for the content of the Appendix. The label and the title of the Appendix should appear in bold, centered and in title case, in separate lines at the top of the page on which the Appendix begins.
