Jennifer Nelson’s present work deals with the delicate balance of the natural world. Extinction and loss are the motivation behind To Be Voiced. Through a collaborative process, the artist has worked with ecologists, biologists, children, a sound artist, and a choral director to study and discuss our environment and future inheritance, emphasising learning through listening. Focusing on Ymittos mountain, the artist designs and stages a workshop with children, creating a close relationship with this specific place and suggesting the “legal rights” of the environment and the respect we owe to nature.
In her video Nelson presents children attempting to reproduce or imagine the wild sounds of endangered species, establishing a bond with the local flora and fauna at risk of extinction, while also trying to invoke an act of empathy and a deep recognition of the dasein of others, similar to Beuys’s intention in his performances with dead or live animals.

This work is made in collaboration with Tim Ward, filmmaker and Deree alum Natalia Papadopoulou, filmmaker Dimitri Kotsaras, and composer and musical educator Sofia Kamayianni. Student Nadia Elgazzar made illustrations. I note the support I received researching this project from Stella Apostolaki and Christina Marouli, and from Elias Tziritis of the WWF. Thanks to the College and Nassos Sopilis for the use of production equipment. Thanks to students Nori Tsouloucha, Anna Maria Dimitropoulou, Nadia Elgazzar and Eni Hodaj for their research and production assistance. Thanks to Daphne Vitali and the team at the Goethe. The project was created through several workshops on the biodiversity of Ymittos. These were a series of listening and environmental workshops conducted on Ymittos with a group of participating children. Please note that the parents of everyone appearing in this film have signed release forms giving their permission for the participation of their child in the film.
The work was first screened in May 2021 in Cine Aiolia, Kaisariani Open Air Cinema and subsequently at the Goethe Institut Athen over a 3 month period. The work was commissioned by the Goethe Institut Athen and curator Daphne Vitali for the exhibition, "Everything is in a State of Change" on the occasions of the 100th anniversary of Joseph Beuys.
