Visual materials include images, photographs, videos, films, paintings, and more. Such materials may act as sources of inspiration for your own work, help you understand theoretical models, or even increase the strength of your arguments, when properly used in a paper. Finding high-quality visuals that are not subject to copyright laws may be difficult, especially when using Google. This is why it is better to search for them in library resources or specialized online collections from institutions, such as the ones listed below.

Art Images for College Teaching Photographs of art and architecture around the world with an emphasis on ancient, medieval, and renaissance European works. Most of the images in this collection are believed to be of public domain works.
Art Institute of Chicago Explore and download thousands of artworks in the museum’s wide-ranging collection.
ArtServe ArtServe offers access to around 16,000 unique images relevant to the art and architecture of the Mediterranean Basin, Japan, India, and Cambodia.
Bridgeman Images One of the world's leading sources of art images, representing museums, galleries, and artists throughout the world by providing a central source of fine art for images users.
CC Search CC Search is a search engine that indexes over 300 million images from 19 image collections, such as museum collections, Flickr photos, Thingiverse 3D designs, and more. All of the images included in CC Search are generally free to use in a non-commercial setting.
Classical Art Research Centre Includes the world's largest collection of images of ancient figure-decorated pottery. The Beazley Archive's online databases and other web resources are also freely available through this site.
Getty Search Gateway This tool is designed to help researchers, scholars, and educators discover the variety of resources available across the Getty collections. You can use the tool to browse the collections broadly, by type of resource, or to search directly for assets related to very specific subjects, such as historical periods, artists, object types, etc.
Google Art Project The Art Project is a unique collaboration of Google's Cultural Institute with over 250 renowned art institutions. The project enables people to view more than 45,000 artworks by over 6,000 artists online in extremely high resolution.
Images Online | British Library The British Library holds and provides access to over 150 million items including the King's Library, manuscripts, rare books, musical texts, maps, illustrations, drawings, paintings and photographs spanning almost 3,000 years. The range of images available include illustrations, drawings, paintings, and photographs.
Library of Congress Digital Collections The Library of Congress Digital Collections include, among other things, thousands of photographs, prints, drawings, and maps.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) offers 20,000 high-quality unrestricted images of art. These images are available for everyone to download and use freely.
The MET Collection The MET Collection offers access to over 406,000 high-resolution images of public-domain works covering a period of 5,000 years of world art from ancient years to today. The images can be downloaded, shared, and remixed without restriction.
The National Gallery Images from the National Gallery's collection of Western European paintings spanning 1260 to 1900.
National Portrait Gallery The National Portrait Gallery holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world. Search over 215,000 works, 150,000 of which are illustrated from the 16th century to the present day.
The New York Public Library Digital Collections Explore over 895,000 digitized items from The New York Public Library's collections. This site is a living database with new materials added every day, featuring prints, photographs, maps, manuscripts, streaming video, and more.
NGA Images | National Gallery of Art The NGA Images is an online repository of the images included in the collections of the US National Gallery of Art. The website gives access to more than 51,000 open access high resolution images available for download and use free of charge.
Open Content Program | The Getty Over 100,000 images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute, including more than 72,000 from the Research Institute's Foto Arte Minore archive. Other images include paintings, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, antiquities, sculpture, decorative arts, artists' sketchbooks, watercolors, rare prints from the 16th through the 18th century, and 19th-century architectural drawings of cultural landmarks.
Paris Musées: Images in the Public Domain Over 100,000 images of works in the public domain from a group of fourteen smaller Paris museums (not including the Louvre or the Musée D'Orsay). Search by museum, artist, or even color.
Rijksstudio | Rijksmuseum Rijksmuseum's Rijksstudio makes over 125,000 images freely available in pin-sharp clarity. Signing up for a Rijksstudio account is required for downloading material.
Tate: Art & Artists Images from the Tate Gallery's collections of British art and international modern and contemporary art.
VADS The Visual Arts Data Service comprises over 140,000 images and photographs that are freely available and copyright cleared for use in learning, teaching, and research.
Yale Centre for British Art The Yale Center for British Art holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom, presenting the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period to the present day. This website allows you to view digital reproductions of over 100,000 items from this collection.
